Story of Khwaja Gharib Nawaz and Camels of Prithvi Raj

Story of Khwaja Gharib Nawaz and Camels of Prithvi Raj

In the year 582 AH (1193 CE), when Hazrat Khwaja Gharib Nawaz journeyed from Delhi to Ajmer, he was accompanied by forty disciples and attendants. Upon reaching the town of Sabana, he was stopped by the officials of Raja Prithvi Raj.

The reason was that the Raja’s mother, who was well-versed in astrology, had already foretold the coming of a great saint from the Turkic people, who would bring an end to her son’s rule and deprive him of his wealth and power. She described the saint’s appearance in detail, and instructed her son to be cautious. Consequently, the Raja gave orders to his royal officials that if any person matching that description entered his kingdom, they should intercept him.

When the royal guards encountered Hazrat Khwaja, they recognized the description and, outwardly, they showed him respect and honor. But inwardly, they were plotting to take him away to an unknown place. They requested him to accompany them, claiming that they had prepared a very suitable place for his stay.

Sensing their deceitful intentions, Hazrat Khwaja entered into deep meditation (muraqaba). In a vision, he beheld the Holy Prophet ﷺ who said: “O Moinuddin, never trust these deceitful people. They intend to cause you harm.”

After receiving this spiritual guidance, Hazrat Khwaja rejected the guards’ request and continued his journey until he finally entered Ajmer Sharif.

Story of Khwaja Garib Nawaz and Ana Sagar Lake

Since Ana Sagar (where he was staying) was a place surrounded by many temples, Hazrat Khwaja Gharib Nawaz (RA) chose to stay nearby. This, however, created displeasure among the non-Muslims. Their resentment increased even more when Hazrat’s companions began to perform ablution at the edge of the sacred pond.

The strict Brahmins, who believed that the touch of Muslims would defile the water of the pond, behaved harshly with the servants of Hazrat over this matter. When the attendants came and reported this unjust treatment to khwaja, He became deeply displeased.

In a state of spiritual anger, Hazrat ordered:
“Bring me a bowl of water from Ana Sagar.”

As soon as the bowl was filled, Ana Sagar and the temple ponds all around Ajmer dried up completely. Even the wells and springs of the city became dry, to the extent that the milk in women’s breasts and in the udders of animals ceased to flow. This miracle shook the entire city of Ajmer, causing great panic and astonishment.

Khwaja Garib Nawaz and Soldiers of Raja Pritvi

After the ponds and springs had dried up, the greatness of Hazrat Khwaja Gharib Nawaz (RA) was firmly established in the hearts of the people. Yet, there remained a group in Ajmer that could not tolerate his presence.

The leaders of this group went to Raja Prithvi Raj and complained:
“This fakir, who has taken residence near our temples, must not be allowed to stay here. Not only does he follow a different religion, but his influence and miracles are beginning to affect the beliefs of the common people. It is better that he be removed from this place before it is too late.”

Hearing this appeal, Raja Prithvi Raj ordered Hazrat to be expelled from Ajmer. The Raja himself also desired to be rid of this extraordinary fakir (Saint).

However, when the king’s men arrived with the intention of harming Hazrat, he simply took a handful of dust, recited Ayat-ul-Kursi over it, and cast it upon them. The moment the dust touched their bodies, they became stiff and motionless, unable to move from their places.

Witnessing this miracle, the king’s men were overcome with fear and fled. From that moment, none of them dared to approach Hazrat Khwaja Garib Nawaz (RA) again.

Miracle of Khwaja Gharib Nawaz and Shadi Deo Jinn

It is narrated that a jinn was living in Ajmer Sharif for a very long time. The Raja and the people of Ajmer held such deep reverence for that jinn that they actually worshipped him. The Raja had even dedicated some lands and offerings in his name.

However, after the arrival of Hazrat Khwaja Gharib Nawaz (RA), when news of his miracles spread far and wide, this jinn came into the blessed presence of Hazrat Gharib Nawaz. Witnessing the spiritual greatness and inner qualities of Hazrat, he was so deeply moved that he immediately embraced Islam. From that day forward, he joined the circle of Hazrat’s devoted followers.

Hazrat Khwaja Gharib Nawaz (RA) gave him the name Shadi Dev and raised him to a high spiritual rank.

The moment this jinn, once worshipped by the locals, became a servant of Hazrat, the opponents of Khwaja Sahib grew restless. They began to spread the claim that:
“Khwaja Gharib Nawaz is nothing but a great magician. With his magical powers, he has subdued and enslaved the very jinn whom we once worshipped.”

Because of this belief, Hazrat’s enemies started seeking out skilled sorcerers and magicians to challenge him.

Hazrat Khwaja Gharib Nawaz (RA) and the Magician Jaypal

Jaypal was regarded as one of the greatest magicians of his time. People believed that no sorcerer in the world could stand against him, and indeed he was known as a master of the dark arts. Raja Prithvi Raj, in his enmity, appointed Jaypal to confront Hazrat Khwaja Gharib Nawaz (RA).

When Jaypal came forward for the contest, he was not alone. He brought with him 1,500 disciple magicians, 700 terrifying serpents and pythons, and 1,500 magical discs (tilismi chakras). These discs were extraordinary: they floated in the air through sorcery and could fly a hundred miles, striking down the heads of enemy soldiers. With such fearful preparation, Jaypal advanced towards Hazrat Khwaja Gharib Nawaz (RA).

When Hazrat was informed of Jaypal’s approach with such force, he calmly drew a circle around himself and his companions. He then said:
“Insha’Allah, no enemy will be able to enter this circle, nor will their magic have any effect here.”

As soon as Jaypal and his forces reached the circle and attempted to step inside, but they all fell flat on their faces . Shocked and defeated in this attempt, Jaypal (the magician) tried to use his other magical powers. But by the Divine will, none of his spells worked. Instead, every spell turned back upon him and his own men. His terrifying magical discs returned upon his followers and cut off their heads. His serpents and pythons, instead of attacking Hazrat, fled away into the mountains.

Jaypal’s failure greatly disappointed the Raja and the opponents of Khwaja Gharib Nawaz. Left with no choice, the Raja humbly pleaded:
“O holy saint, people are dying of thirst. You are a man of God, have mercy on them.”

Hazrat then commanded Jaypal to lift his blessed water bowl. Jaypal tried hard, but he could not even move it. Hazrat then turned to Shadi Dev (a jinn who was under Hazrat’s service) and told him to pick it up. Shadi Dev lifted the bowl with ease and presented it before Hazrat.

Hazrat took a little water from it and sprinkled it over the dry lakes, ponds, and springs. Instantly, all of them filled up to the brim with water. Even the breasts of women began flowing with milk for their children, and the animals’ udders were filled as well.

Witnessing these divine miracles, both the Raja and Hazrat’s opponents were left utterly astonished and humbled.
